History of Brentford FC
Brentford Football Club is a professional football club based in Brentford located in West London, England. They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, and will gain promotion through the play-offs at the end of the 2020-21 season. The club, nicknamed ‘the Bees’, was founded in 1889 and played home games at Griffin Park from 1904 before moving to the Gtech Community Stadium in 2020. Their main rivals are West London club Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. Brentford’s main home colors are red and white striped shirts, black shorts and red or black socks. These have been the club’s main home colors since the 1925-26 season, apart from one season in 1960-61 when yellow (gold) and blue were used, without success. The entry colors of the Football League in 1920-21 were white shirts, navy shorts and navy socks. The away kits have changed over the years, with the colors now being a yellow shirt with yellow shorts, both with black detailing, along with yellow socks. Brentford have had a number of badges on their shirts since their formation in 1889.
Brentford FC initially played amateur football before joining the London League in 1896, finishing as runners-up in the Second Division and then the First Division to win election to the Southern League in 1898. They won the Second Division of the Southern League in 1900–01 and were elected to the Football League in 1920. Brentford won the Third Division South title in 1932–33 and the Second Division title in 1934-35. The club enjoyed a successful period in the top flight of English football, finishing in the top five in the First Division in 1935-36, their highest finish in the league before three relegations saw them relegated to the Fourth Division in 1962.
Brentford FC crown Fourth Division winners in 1962-63 but relegated in 1966 and again in 1973 after winning promotion in 1971-72. Brentford spent 14 seasons in the Third Division after winning promotion in 1977-78 and winning the Third Division title in 1991–92, although they were relegated again in 1993. Brentford were relegated to the fourth tier in 1998 and won promotion as champions in the 1998-99 campaign. The club were relegated in 2007 and won promotion as League Two champions in 2008–09 before being promoted from League One in 2013-14. They failed to make the Championship play-off campaigns in 2015 and 2020. Brentford have a poor record in finals, finishing second in three Associate Members Cup / Football League Trophy finals (1985, 2001 and 2011) and losing four games. offs – off finals (1997 Second Division Final, 2002 Second Division Final, 2013 League One Final and 2020 Championship Final). However, Brentford won the 2021 Championship Final to reach the top flight for the first time since the 1946-47 season.
